Learn AutoCAD with this step-by-step guide, covering the user interface, basic drawing and editing, views, commands, and materials.
Step 1: Introduction
In this article, we are going to learn to create a typical architectural model using the simplest 2D layout (refer to Step 1 of the Quick Start Tutorial).
Note: If you already have a basic knowledge of AutoCAD, you can skip this article and proceed to Step 2.
AutoCAD is a powerful program that includes many command lines for you to unleash your creativity. AutoCAD is a powerful program that includes many command lines for you to unleash your creativity. We have included a complete reference for AutoCAD commands in the bottom of this article.
Step 2: Create a New Document
Select File | New to open the New tab, as shown in the following figure:
You should see a dialog box similar to the one shown in the figure. Simply fill in the name of your document and click OK. Your document will be created with no objects in it, as shown in the following figure:
Step 3: Create a Grid
Use the Grid tab on the ribbon to create a grid and define the top, left, and right coordinates of the work area.
To create a grid, select the Workbench tab on the ribbon, and then click on the Grid tab:
Select View | Grid Display from the menu bar, as shown in the following figure:
To set the size of the grid, enter the X and Y size in the dialog box that appears. You can also type in the size to specify a number value (eg: 3,3cm). You can choose to create a grid at any size, and you can even create a non-uniform grid, such as a 15mm grid. A useful tutorial on how to create grids is available here.
To create a 2D work area, enter 2 in the X and Y coordinate fields, as shown in the following figure:
Now you can draw a rectangle to define your work area:
Select Create Rectangle from the Draw menu, as shown in the following figure:
The new rectangle will be located at the top left corner of your work area.

AutoCAD software was originally released in 1987 by AutoDesk, Inc. as a DOS-based application using a graphical user interface with a mouse. A classic design was driven by the constraints of DOS and the pixel art of the Apple II.
AutoCAD was originally available in three main versions: AutoCAD LT, AutoCAD 2000, and AutoCAD SE. AutoCAD LT is designed for the consumer markets. The computer has 64 MB of RAM and the user can save a drawing by the simple click of the mouse, thus with no need for saving files on the computer. The first release of AutoCAD was made available in 1987.
AutoCAD 2000 is a professional version. The new release is also available for Windows. It is designed to meet the needs of the drafting and design community.
AutoCAD SE was designed as the CAD program for engineering students. It was available as a diskette, so it was used by engineering students at colleges and universities, especially in the United States.
The first version released for Windows was AutoCAD 2000.
AutoCAD 2006 is a complete redesign. It was also released as a diskette. Later, it was released for Windows and on the Web.
AutoCAD 2015 was released in the form of a monthly subscription. It was released as a CD/DVD. This new release was not released on the Web. This version uses the drevpy Python library.
AutoCAD 2016 was released as a monthly subscription. It was also released as a CD/DVD. This new release was not released on the Web. This version uses the drevpy Python library.
AutoCAD Software provides the user with two sets of commands. The first is the standard set, which is designed

You should see the folder icon with the words “Master,” “Support,” and “Schematic” in blue.
Double-click on I1_Support and notice the words “Master”, “Support”, and “Schematic” under the blue folder.
Now that you have Autocad you can save the file to a disk or network folder.
Close the I1_Support folder and open another Autocad program to view the file you just created.
A word of advice: you should not save the file to your Autocad folder as it will corrupt the version of Autocad that you are using.

The Markup Import and Markup Assist features in AutoCAD are inspired by how digital assistants, such as Siri, are used in the real world. Whether it’s taking a picture of a paper document or receiving a text file, quick and easy incorporation of the feedback into your drawings is essential for your projects. A step by step process to do that has been proposed by the feedback team at Autodesk.
Markup Assist with Paper
Getting started is simple. The tool appears when you hold down the Ctrl key while importing the file. After a prompt, you can set the relative position of the paper document, select which corner is active, and drag to move it within the drawing area. Once you have the item where you want it, you can type text to provide feedback directly into the text box, select from the suggested list of text styles, or use the font picker.
The tool behaves very similarly to the Suggest feature in the New Drawing dialog box. It shows suggestions as you type, and you can add feedback directly to the drawing.
Markup Assist with PDFs
You can also import and incorporate feedback into your AutoCAD drawings that were created in InDesign or Adobe Illustrator, or that were saved as a PDF file.
Enable the Markup Import and Markup Assist tools on the preferences screen by choosing Markup Assist > Import Markup. You can also configure which file types you want to support with Import Markup. (A full description of the new markup import feature is available in the “Importing a new document” section of the Using Markups tutorial video.)
Some useful tools are available when importing from a PDF.
The document's layout is automatically aligned to the drawing area. For example, if the drawings are aligned to a paper edge, then the document will be aligned to the paper edge. The same applies to drawings aligned to the drawing area edge. You can reverse the alignment by choosing Tools > Alignment Options > Align.
There are two options for configuring the Alignment option. You can choose Auto-Align to Align all drawing objects to the paper edge or to Align to the edge of the drawing area. The top option Auto-Align aligns all drawing objects to the paper edge, as you can see in the following illustration.
If you choose the bottom option, Align to the edge of the drawing area, then the objects that are aligned to
